French Way of St. James Route from Astorga to Santiago
ASTORGAAstorga, where you will start your exciting pilgrimage tomorrow on the French Way of Santiago. OVERNIGHT
STAGE 1 (52 KM) · FROM ASTORGA TO PONFERRADAThis first stage of your Camino Frances de Santiago begins with a gentle climb that will gain difficulty in the next 30 kilometers of travel. You will reach a small town where you can stop to enjoy the evocative atmosphere that your houses provide with slate roofs. A short distance from the town you will see Cruz de Ferro, a simple monument that, as its name in Galician indicates, is made of iron. At its base we will find thousands of small stones that the pilgrims leave to request protection from God to make the Camino de Santiago. Some pilgrims bring those stones from their place of origin. This place is considered by many pilgrims a symbol of 'human difficulties'. Today's stage ends in the Leon city of Ponferrada, capital of the El Bierzo Region. This city of about 70,000 inhabitants has a long tradition of welcoming all pilgrims who, like you, opt for this French Jacobean Route. In it you will have the possibility to enjoy its beautiful historical-artistic heritage among which monuments and museums such as the Castle of the Templars, the museum of El Bierzo and the Basilica of La Virgen de la Encina s. XVI; as well as its wonderful cuisine and typical products. FULL BREAKFAST • LUGAGGE TRANSFER • OVERNIGHT
STAGE 2 (53 KM) · FROM PONFERRADA TO O CEBREIROIn today's stage, it is worth visiting the Hermitage of San Roque, where the walls were made of round stones and the roof covered with blackboards. Next, your route will cross the Cúa River, on which is the sanctuary of the Virgen de las Angustias, which serves as a refuge for pilgrims. Before continuing your trip, we recommend you visit the Bodegas Godelia winery, where a famous Spanish wine is produced. Then you will reach the town of Villafranca del Bierzo, located between two mountains. This is the last city that you will pass at this stage, so it is worth stopping for a moment and visiting, for example, the churches: Iglesia of Santiago of the twelfth century and the Church of St. Nicholas of the seventeenth century. It is also worth visiting the Castle-Palace of the Marquises of the 16th century. The trip ends in a city where pilgrims from around the world can take refuge and rest. In it there are interesting old buildings called Pallozas: low houses whose roofs are covered with straw. FULL BREAKFAST • LUGAGGE TRANSFER • OVERNIGHT
STAGE 3 (62 KM) · FROM O CEBREIRO TO PORTOMARINYou are now in Galicia, where higher elevations will be more and more often, which will certainly feel your legs. Once you pass Padornelo, pay attention to the interesting, nineteenth-century church of Iglesia de San Juan. Next you will reach the city, which was built in the 9th century. Once there were many monumental castles in its area, but none of them has survived to this day. However, you can admire another church, this time it will be Iglesia de Santiago. STAGE 4 (53 KM) · FROM PORTOMARIN TO ARZUAThroughout this day we will enjoy the wonderful works of art and monuments and the landscapes full of oak and eucalyptus forests that we will find along the way. We will arrive at Castromaior where we will see the Castro de Castromaior, a settlement of the Iron Age. An important point on the route will also be the Lameiros Crossing of 1670. It has a great symbolic meaning, the individual parts of the cross show a hammer, nails and a skull, a clear symbol of the death of Jesus Christ. FULL BREAKFAST • LUGAGGE TRANSFER • OVERNIGHT
STAGE 5 (39 KM) · FROM ARZUA TO SANTIAGO DE COMPOSTELAThis day includes easier routes to overcome, thanks to which we will keep the energy for the end in the cathedral of Santiago de Compostela.
